The BRL - Brazilian Real - is the official currency of Brazil in South America. There are 100 centavos in each 1 Real ( its sub-unit ). The symbol for BRL is R$. The real, meaning 'royal, was first introduced by Portugese settlers in 1690. The modern real (plural reais) was introduced in 1994 following the Latin American economic crisis. It is currently a floating currency, though it was semi-pegged to the U.S. dollar for most of the 1990s.
